Could black mold behind AC cause my kids' constant cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled their bedroom AC unit out to check the filter and the entire wall behind it is covered in a disgusting black, fuzzy patch. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this. Could this mold be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms?

Yes, the black mold behind the AC is very likely the cause of your children's persistent cough. In Dubai's climate, AC units constantly battle high humidity and can produce significant condensation. If a drain line is slightly blocked or an insulation seal fails, that moisture gets trapped inside the wall, creating an ideal environment for mold to flourish directly in the air path of the unit.

The constant coughing is a classic symptom of mold exposure, as spores are blown directly into the room, irritating the respiratory system. Children are particularly susceptible. This situation requires professional assessment. The visible patch is only a sign of the problem; the moisture source must be identified and fixed to prevent recurrence. In many cases, the wall cavity itself requires remediation.

For a case like this in a Jumeirah villa, a proper inspection involves more than just cleaning the visible mold. It should include a moisture meter check of the surrounding walls and an assessment of the AC drain line and insulation. Reputable companies will provide documentation of the contamination levels before and after remediation, often through lab analysis, to verify the environment is safe again.
