Could black mold behind bed cause persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't seem to shake it, even with medication. I finally pulled out the wardrobe in our master bedroom to find a huge patch of black mold on the wall behind it, right where their heads rest when they sleep. I'm terrified this is the cause. Could this mold be the reason for their persistent cough and what are the immediate steps I should take?

Yes, black mold behind a bed can absolutely be the cause of a persistent cough, especially in children. The constant exposure to mold spores right at the breathing zone during sleep is a significant health risk. This type of exposure commonly causes upper respiratory irritation, leading to chronic coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy or asthma symptoms.

Your immediate step should be to isolate the area. Move the children to another room to sleep and keep the bedroom door closed to prevent spores from circulating. Do not attempt to scrub the mold yourself, as this can release a massive amount of spores into the air. For a patch of significant size, professional remediation is strongly advised. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and year-round AC use create perfect conditions for this type of hidden growth, often due to condensation on exterior walls.

A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—often a small plumbing leak, capillary action from the slab, or condensation from the AC—and must be fixed first to prevent recurrence. The remediation itself involves containment, HEPA-filtered air scrubbing, and safe removal of contaminated materials. After remediation, a clearance test from an independent lab is the only way to verify the spore count in the air has returned to a safe level. This entire evidence-based process is what resolves the problem for good.
