Could black mold behind furniture cause my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled out a suitcase from the bottom of our wardrobe in the spare room and found a huge patch of black mold on the wall behind it, probably from the humidity. We live in an older building in Deira. Could this mold be the cause of their persistent coughs and runny noses?

Based on the symptoms you've described and your location in Deira, it is highly plausible that the discovered black mold is a significant contributor to your children's persistent respiratory issues. The UAE's climate, characterized by extreme humidity and the constant use of air conditioning, creates ideal conditions for mold growth, particularly in older buildings where ventilation may be inadequate. When furniture is placed directly against a wall, it traps moisture and restricts airflow, leading to condensation and subsequent mold colonization on the cold wall surfaces.

The type of mold is critical. While the term "black mold" is often associated with Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic species known to produce mycotoxins that can cause severe respiratory distress, chronic coughing, and runny noses, other common molds like Aspergillus or Cladosporium can also trigger these allergic reactions. The proximity of the infestation to your living quarters means fungal spores are likely being circulated through your home's air system, continuously exposing your family.

In Dubai, addressing this is not just a health matter but also a regulatory one for building integrity. We strongly advise against attempting to remove this yourself, as improper remediation can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, drastically increasing exposure. A certified professional inspection is absolutely necessary to identify the exact species, determine the moisture source, and assess the full extent of the contamination, which often extends beyond the visible patch.
