Could black mold behind sofa cause kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled our sofa away from the wall in the living room of our villa in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from the humidity. Could this be the reason they’re so sick, and what’s the safest way to get rid of it without exposing them further?

Yes, the black mold behind your sofa is very likely contributing to your children's persistent cough. In Dubai's humid climate, this is a common issue, especially when furniture is placed against exterior walls that can develop condensation from temperature differences. The mold releases spores and mycotoxins into your indoor air, which are known respiratory irritants. For children, whose immune systems are still developing, this exposure commonly leads to chronic coughing, wheezing, and worsened allergy symptoms.

The safest course of action is to arrange for professional mold inspection and remediation. Do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself, as scrubbing will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, significantly increasing your family's exposure. A proper remediation involves isolating the area with physical barriers, using HEPA-filtered negative air machines to capture spores, and safely removing contaminated materials. The underlying cause, likely condensation from the wall, must also be identified and fixed to prevent rapid regrowth.

For your own safety until help arrives, keep the children out of that room and ensure good ventilation by opening windows if outdoor conditions permit. A certified mold inspector can take samples to identify the species, which helps assess the specific health risk, and provide a protocol for safe, complete removal that protects your family during the process.
