Could black mold behind wardrobe cause my toddler's cough?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler has been having a persistent cough and I just found a patch of black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is always cold from the AC. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for about five years and never had an issue until after the heavy dew this winter. Could this be the cause of his coughing, and how do I find a reliable company to test if it’s toxic mold?

Yes, the black spots behind your wardrobe could absolutely be contributing to your toddler's persistent cough. The constant cold from the AC creates a perfect environment for condensation to form on that wall, especially behind large furniture where air doesn't circulate. This dampness, combined with the high humidity we've had, allows mold to thrive.

In the Dubai climate, where we run AC year-round, this is a common issue. The AC cools the wall, but the outdoor heat and humidity cause moisture to condense on the cold surface. The spores from this mold are then circulated by the AC system, potentially irritating your toddler's sensitive respiratory system.

While not all black mold is the infamous "toxic" Stachybotrys, any mold can cause allergic reactions and respiratory irritation, particularly in children. A persistent cough is a classic symptom of mold exposure.

For a reliable test, avoid companies that only do air sampling without a physical inspection. A proper inspection involves a visual assessment, moisture mapping to find the water source, and then targeted sampling. The sample must be analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab to identify the species and its potential toxicity, which dictates the remediation strategy. In Dubai, look for a company that is a member of a recognized industry body like the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) and can provide a detailed report with lab results. This scientific evidence is what separates a credible diagnosis from a simple visual guess.
