Could black mold cause my child's cough and how remove safely?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of my kids' bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It must have been growing slowly for a while. Since the weather got more humid, my youngest has developed a persistent cough that gets worse at night. Could this mold be the cause of her respiratory issues and what's the safest way to handle it with children in the house?

Black mould exposure can certainly cause respiratory irritation like a persistent cough, especially in children whose airways are more sensitive. The increased humidity here in Dubai provides the perfect environment for it to thrive, particularly in enclosed spaces like closets with poor airflow.

For a child's room, the safest approach is to first contain the area. Keep the closet door closed and restrict access. Small patches (under one square foot) can sometimes be cleaned with a solution of diluted white vinegar, but never use bleach as it can release harmful fumes and doesn't prevent regrowth. However, given the potential health risk to your child and the fact it's been growing unseen, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent behind walls or under flooring. They can also perform air quality testing to identify the spore count in the room.

Remediation with children present requires strict containment protocols—sealing the area with plastic sheeting and using HEPA air scrubbers to filter spores from the air. Once the mould is physically removed and the underlying moisture source (often condensation from AC or a small leak) is fixed, a post-remediation verification test is the only way to confirm the space is truly safe. Look for a provider that uses a third-party lab for unbiased results, as Dubai Municipality guidelines recommend. Addressing the humidity with a dehumidifier or ensuring your AC is running efficiently can help prevent it from returning.
