Could black mold cause my husband's headaches and sinus pressure?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache for the past month, and it's getting worse. I'm really worried this is the cause, especially with the humidity lately. **Could this type of mold be responsible for his daily headaches and sinus pressure, or are we overreacting?**

Black mold exposure can absolutely cause the symptoms you're describing—headaches, sinus pressure, and congestion are among the most common reactions. The high humidity we experience in Dubai creates an ideal environment for mold to thrive, especially in less-ventilated spaces like closets or behind furniture where condensation can accumulate.

Given that the symptoms began and have worsened over the past month, coinciding with your discovery, it is very likely the mold is a contributing factor. It is not an overreaction to be concerned. The first step is to address the moisture source; in a closet, this is often poor air circulation or a small, unnoticed condensation leak from an adjacent AC unit or pipe.

For a patch of that size and due to the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the specific species, as some types of black mold (like Stachybotrys) are more strongly linked to these health effects, and assess if there is hidden growth within the wall. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem. An inspector will use containment and specialized cleaning agents.

In the interim, improve ventilation in the room by running an exhaust fan and ensure your AC unit is set to a consistent, dehumidifying mode to help reduce ambient moisture levels.
