Could black mold cause my kids' persistent coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled our large wardrobe away from the bedroom wall in our Marina apartment and found a huge patch of black mold spreading from the corner, probably from a small AC leak we didn't notice. It's been so humid lately it must have gotten worse. Could this mold be the cause of their persistent coughs and runny noses?

Black mold exposure is a very likely cause of persistent coughing and runny noses, especially in children who are more sensitive to airborne spores. The consistent humidity in Dubai, combined with concealed AC condensation leaks in Marina apartments, creates the perfect environment for this kind of rapid mold growth behind furniture.

You should arrange for a professional mold inspection immediately. The inspector will identify the moisture source (like that AC leak) and assess the full extent of the growth, which often spreads inside wall cavities. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the air quality. For a situation of this size, proper containment and removal by a certified technician is necessary to protect your family.

Once the moisture issue is fixed and the mold is professionally remediated, your children's symptoms should begin to subside. To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly to prevent leaks and consider using a dehumidifier to maintain indoor humidity levels below 60%, which is crucial in our coastal climate.
