Could black mold from AC cause my sinus issues and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little for a couple of months, and now I’ve found patches of black mold on the wall behind the headboard. My sinuses have been constantly blocked and I've been waking up with a headache every morning for the past two weeks. Could this mold be causing these symptoms and how dangerous is it?

Yes, the black mould from your AC leak is very likely causing your sinus issues and headaches. The constant moisture from the leak creates an ideal environment for mould growth, and its spores are being circulated directly into your bedroom air. Exposure to these spores, especially over several months while you sleep, is a common trigger for allergic reactions, sinus inflammation (rhinitis), and headaches.

In Dubai's climate, where we rely on AC year-round, a small leak can lead to significant hidden mould problems due to high ambient humidity. The wall cavity behind your headboard is a classic problem area, as the cold surface from the AC unit causes condensation that soaks into the drywall, hidden from view until the mould colony is well established. The symptoms you describe—persistent sinus blockage and morning headaches—are strong indicators of a mould-related health response.

You should arrange a professional indoor environmental assessment. A proper inspection involves moisture mapping and air/surface sampling to identify the mould species and the full extent of the contamination, which is often worse than what's visible. For a confirmed issue, remediation must start by fixing the AC leak at its source. The affected section of drywall will likely need to be removed and replaced, followed by a thorough hygienization of the area. Simply cleaning the visible spot is insufficient, as the mould's root system (hyphae) penetrates deep into porous materials.

Until it's resolved, improve ventilation in the room when possible and consider using a dehumidifier. For your health, it's best to sleep in another room until the mould is professionally remediated.
