Could black mold from my AC be making me sick?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I’m seeing these black, speckled patches on the wall behind the unit. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy head and a sore throat for weeks and I’m starting to worry. Is this black mold and could it be making me sick, or is it just the usual Dubai dust?

Based on your description of a leaking AC unit in JLT and the accompanying symptoms, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a mold issue, and it is very likely making you sick. The black, speckled patches are a classic visual indicator of mold colonization, often of the Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) or Aspergillus variety, both of which are known to produce mycotoxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that cause the exact symptoms you describe: chronic rhinitis, sinus congestion, sore throat, and headaches.

The climate in Dubai is a significant aggravating factor. The extreme humidity, combined with condensation from constant air conditioning use, creates an ideal breeding ground for mold. A leaking AC unit is a critical failure point, as it provides a continuous source of moisture directly into your building materials. The interior of the AC drip pan and ductwork can also become contaminated, effectively aerosolizing spores and mycotoxins throughout your apartment every time the unit operates.

This is not simply "Dubai dust." Dust is an irritant, but it does not cause the persistent inflammatory response associated with microbial amplification. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, take indoor air quality seriously, and a situation like this requires professional assessment.

I strongly recommend you cease using that AC unit and arrange for a professional indoor environmental inspection immediately. Our certified team at Saniservice conducts comprehensive assessments, including moisture mapping, thermal imaging, and air/surface sampling to identify the species and concentration of mold present. This data is crucial for formulating an effective remediation protocol to not only remove the visible growth but also address the contamination within the AC system and the building structure itself.
