Could black mold from our closet cause my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks, especially my youngest, and I’m getting worried. I just pulled out some old winter clothes from the storage closet under our stairs in Jumeirah and found a bunch of them covered in this black, fuzzy stuff. The whole space smells damp and earthy. Could this be black mold and is it dangerous enough to cause their breathing issues?

It certainly could be the cause. The damp, earthy smell and visible black growth in a confined storage space are strong indicators of a mold colony. The climate in Dubai, particularly the high humidity and constant AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold in poorly ventilated areas like under-stair closets. Spores from that closet are likely circulating through your home's air and being inhaled.
While not all black mold is the infamous Stachybotrys, prolonged exposure to many common mold types can cause respiratory irritation, persistent coughing, and worsen allergy symptoms, especially in children. Your youngest may be more affected due to a smaller lung capacity and developing immune system. For any visible growth larger than a square foot, or when health symptoms are present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the specific species through lab analysis to determine the actual risk level. In the meantime, avoid disturbing the area to prevent releasing more spores, keep the closet door closed, and consider using a standalone HEPA air purifier in adjacent living spaces to help reduce airborne spore levels while you arrange for an assessment. |
