Could black mold from our storage be making my family sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled out some old winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs in our Jumeirah villa and found a bunch of them covered in these black, powdery spots. The whole space smells like damp earth. Could this be toxic black mold and is it the reason my family is getting sick?

It very well could be. The symptoms you describe—persistent coughing—are a common reaction to mold exposure, especially in children whose respiratory systems are more sensitive. The damp, earthy smell and black, powdery spots are strong indicators of an active mold colony.

In Dubai's climate, enclosed storage areas like under-stairs cupboards are prime locations for mold. They often lack ventilation and are subject to condensation from temperature differences between the air-conditioned home and the humid outdoor air. This creates the damp environment mold needs to thrive. While the term "toxic black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys, many black-colored molds can produce allergens and irritants that cause the symptoms you're seeing.

Your first step is to isolate the area. Keep the cupboard closed and restrict your children's access to prevent further spore dispersal. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as improper disturbance can aerosolize a massive amount of spores throughout your home.

For a situation of this scale with health symptoms already present, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the specific mold species through lab analysis, which is crucial for understanding the potential health risks and determining the correct remediation method. The process involves containing the area, safely removing the contaminated materials (like those clothes), and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. Proper remediation addresses the underlying moisture source—often poor ventilation or a minor, unnoticed leak—to prevent it from returning.
