Could black mold in a closed room make us sick?« Back to Previous Page

Our kids have been having a lot of allergy-like symptoms lately, and I just pulled out some old winter clothes from the storage room to find a bunch of them covered in fuzzy black spots. The room has a damp feel to it, even though we keep the AC on. Is this black mold, and could it be making my family sick from just being in that one closed-off room?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the fuzzy black spots on the stored clothing are indeed mold, and it is a significant health concern. The term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic species, but other common black-colored molds like Aspergillus niger can also cause severe allergic reactions and respiratory issues. The symptoms your children are experiencing are a classic indicator of mold exposure.

Crucially, mold does not remain confined to a closed-off room. Mold reproduces by releasing microscopic spores into the air. These spores can easily travel through your home's ventilation system, through doorways, and on clothing, effectively contaminating the entire living environment. The Dubai climate, with its high ambient humidity, creates a perfect breeding ground. Even with AC running, poorly insulated storage rooms can experience significant condensation, especially on cold walls behind furniture or in closets, providing the persistent moisture mold needs to thrive.

A DIY approach is not recommended. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize a massive number of spores, drastically increasing exposure. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have specific guidelines for indoor air quality and mold remediation to ensure it is handled safely and effectively.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors use tools like moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air sampling to identify the full extent of the contamination, the moisture source, and the species present. This is critical for developing an effective remediation plan.
