Could black mold in closet be causing kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I just found patches of black, fuzzy stuff in the corner of their bedroom closet where we store their winter clothes. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried the recent humidity has made it worse. Could this be the cause of their allergies and what’s the safest way to get rid of it without exposing them to harsh chemicals?

Based on your description of black, fuzzy patches in a closet used for winter storage in a Jumeirah villa, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a significant mold infestation. The persistent cough your children are experiencing is a classic symptom of exposure to mold spores, which act as a powerful respiratory irritant and allergen.

The climate in Dubai is a primary catalyst for this issue. The high ambient humidity, especially during summer months, creates an ideal environment for mold growth. This is exacerbated when air conditioning systems are set to very low temperatures, causing significant condensation on cooler surfaces like interior walls and within closets. Storing damp or moisture-retaining items like winter clothing in a poorly ventilated space provides the organic material mold needs to thrive.

Attempting a DIY removal with bleach or other harsh chemicals is strongly discouraged. These methods often only bleach the visible surface mold, leaving the root system intact, and can release a dangerous cloud of spores and chemical fumes into your home's air, potentially worsening your children's respiratory symptoms.

For a situation involving health impacts and a suspected large colony, a professional inspection is mandatory. We use thermal imaging to identify moisture sources and air sampling to determine spore concentration and species type, which is critical for understanding the health risk. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and applying specialized, non-toxic enzymatic cleaners that destroy the mold at its root.
