Could black mold in closet cause kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a few weeks now, and I just found a bunch of black, fuzzy patches in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. We’re in a villa in Mirdif, and the weather's been so humid lately. Could this mold be the reason for their coughs and how dangerous is it for them?

Black mold in a closet can absolutely be the cause of persistent coughing in children. The humid weather we've been experiencing in Dubai creates ideal conditions for mold growth, especially in poorly ventilated areas like closets against exterior walls. The cough is a common reaction to inhaling mold spores, which irritate the airways and can worsen allergies or asthma.

In a villa in Mirdif, this is a frequent issue due to condensation from air conditioning and high ambient humidity. The risk is higher for children, as their respiratory systems are still developing. While not all black mold is the highly toxic Stachybotrys variety, any persistent mold growth should be addressed to alleviate symptoms and prevent further exposure.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source—often a small leak or condensation buildup—and assess the extent of the growth behind the boxes. Simply wiping it away is insufficient if the underlying moisture issue isn't solved, as it will return. A certified inspector can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation strategy and confirms the health risk.

In the meantime, improve ventilation in the room, use a dehumidifier, and keep the children away from the affected area. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and proper remediation should follow standards like those from the IICRC to ensure it’s done correctly and doesn’t spread spores throughout the home.
