Could black mold in Dubai be making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and their eyes are always watery, and I just found what looks like black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’re in an older building in Deira and the AC unit in that room has been leaking a little. Could this mold be the reason they’re sick, and what’s the safest way to get it cleaned here in Dubai?

Yes, black mold in a humid climate like Dubai can certainly cause the symptoms you're describing in children. The persistent cough and watery eyes are classic signs of mold exposure, which irritates the respiratory system. Children are often more susceptible because their immune systems are still developing and they breathe at a faster rate than adults.

The leaking AC unit is almost certainly the root cause. It creates a constant source of moisture, and when combined with our high humidity, it creates an ideal environment for mold to grow behind the wardrobe and, critically, within the AC system itself. The AC can then blow those spores throughout the room.

For a situation involving children's health and a visible infestation, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY cleaning with bleach is not advised; it often fails to address the root moisture problem and can agitate spores, making the air quality worse temporarily. In Dubai, look for a provider that uses a science-based approach: they should conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold type and spore count, isolate the area to prevent cross-contamination, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and, most importantly, identify and fix the moisture source (the AC leak).

Any reputable company will be able to explain Dubai Municipality and DHA guidelines for remediation and should provide you with verifiable before-and-after lab reports to confirm the environment is safe. The priority is stopping the leak, then properly remediating the mold.
