Could black mold in my closet cause my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be related to the black spots I just found in the corner of our master bedroom closet. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and it’s been so humid lately, even with the AC running constantly. What’s the best way to clean this safely and what can I do to stop it from coming back, especially with this weather?

Yes, black mold in your closet could definitely be the cause of your kids' persistent cough. In the high humidity we experience in Dubai, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets on exterior walls, mold spores can thrive. These spores are irritants and, when inhaled, commonly cause respiratory symptoms like coughing, sneezing, and throat irritation, particularly in children.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself carefully. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water) to disinfect. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after cleaning. Do not attempt this if anyone in the household has severe allergies or asthma, as disturbing the mold can release a large number of spores. The key to stopping it from returning is controlling the moisture. This is the biggest challenge in our climate. Check for any leaks from pipes or the roof adjacent to the closet. Since the AC runs constantly, the cold surface of an exterior wall can cause condensation to form behind the closet, creating the damp environment mold needs. Move the closet slightly away from the wall to improve air circulation and consider using a moisture-absorbing product like a desiccant bag inside. If the area is large, the mold returns quickly after cleaning, or the coughs persist, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of dampness and conduct lab tests to identify the mold species, which is crucial for understanding the health risk and guiding proper remediation. In villas, this often traces back to a condensation issue exacerbated by the extreme difference between the outdoor heat and indoor cooling. |
