Could black mold in my cupboard cause my kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the summer started and I'm really worried. I pulled out some old winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs in Jumeirah and found a bunch of them covered in these black, fuzzy spots. The whole cupboard has this damp, earthy smell that’s making me suspicious. Could this black mold be the reason for their constant coughs and how do I get rid of it safely?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black mold in your storage cupboard is a significant contributing factor to your children's persistent coughs. The black, fuzzy spots you observed are indicative of a fungal colony, likely of the genus Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold") or Aspergillus niger. These molds produce mycotoxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as metabolic byproducts. When disturbed, these particles become airborne and are easily inhaled, acting as potent irritants to the respiratory tract. This can trigger allergic reactions, asthma-like symptoms, and chronic coughing, particularly in children who have more sensitive respiratory systems.

The climate in Dubai is a primary catalyst for this issue. The extreme humidity, especially during the summer months, combined with the year-round use of air conditioning, creates significant temperature differentials that lead to condensation in poorly ventilated spaces like under-stair cupboards. This condensation provides the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive on organic materials such as cotton, wool, and leather found in winter clothing.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as improper disturbance will aerosolize a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins throughout your home. The remediation process requires professional intervention. Certified specialists, like our team at Saniservice, follow strict protocols per UAE health and safety guidelines. This includes isolating the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure (containment), using HEPA filtration air scrubbers to clean the air, safely removing and disposing of unsalvageable porous materials, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial agents to eliminate the mold at its root. Following remediation, we identify and rectify the source of moisture to prevent recurrence.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate assessment.
