Could black mold on toys be causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the past two weeks, and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out a few toys from the corner of their playroom, which is right under the AC vent, and found a bunch of them covered in this black, fuzzy stuff. The room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC running constantly. Could this be the dangerous black mold I’ve heard about, and is it what’s making them sick?

It very likely could be, given the symptoms and the location under the AC vent. The dampness you describe is a major red flag; it indicates condensation issues, which are common in Dubai's climate where AC units work hard and can create moisture if not properly maintained. The black, fuzzy growth on the toys is a clear sign of a mold colony.

While the term "toxic black mold" is often overused, the presence of any mold, particularly Stachybotrys chartarum, can cause persistent respiratory irritation like coughing, especially in children. Their smaller lungs and developing immune systems are more susceptible. The constant airflow from the AC vent would be aerosolizing the spores directly into the room's air they breathe.

You should arrange for a professional indoor environmental assessment. In the UAE, look for a provider that uses a certified microbiologist and can conduct air and surface sampling to be analyzed at an accredited lab. This is the only way to identify the species and concentration, which dictates the necessary remediation steps. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it can release a much larger cloud of spores.

Immediate steps: Isolate the affected toys in a sealed bag, increase ventilation in the room by opening windows when outdoor humidity is lowest (early morning or late evening), and consider using a portable HEPA air purifier in the children's room as a temporary measure until the source is identified and properly addressed.
