Could dry air affect my daughter's health?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new apartment in Downtown Dubai two months ago, I’ve noticed my 5-year-old daughter has been complaining about feeling cold and tired after coming home from school. The air seems particularly dry, especially in her bedroom which is on the north side of the unit where the AC vents are located. Should I be concerned that this might affect her health or could it just be a seasonal change?

The dry air within your apartment could indeed affect the health of your daughter. The UAE, including Dubai, experiences varying humidity levels throughout the year, and indoor spaces often experience even drier conditions due to the extensive use of air conditioning systems. Dry air can lead to several issues impacting respiratory health, especially in children.

Firstly, dryness can exacerbate existing conditions such as asthma or allergies. In Dubai, with its high pollen count during certain seasons, your daughter's complaints could indicate a reaction to allergens combined with dry air. The north side of the apartment, being closer to AC vents, might experience more pronounced effects due to increased airflow and potential coldness.

Research indicates that maintaining optimal indoor humidity levels can significantly improve respiratory health. According to UAE regulations and guidelines set by organizations such as the Dubai Health Authority, it is recommended to keep indoor relative humidity between 40% and 60%. Exceeding this range can lead to discomfort and increased risk of infections, while lower humidity levels, which are common in air-conditioned environments like yours, can irritate mucous membranes and exacerbate respiratory issues.

Given the symptoms your daughter is experiencing, it would be prudent to conduct a professional indoor environmental assessment. This should include not only evaluating current humidity levels but also checking for other potential indoor pollutants such as mold or dust mites, which are common in Dubai's climate.

To implement practical measures, consider investing in a humidifier that can maintain the recommended humidity level. Regular cleaning and maintenance of your air conditioning units are crucial to prevent the accumulation of dust and allergens. Additionally, encouraging regular hydration for your daughter can help alleviate some symptoms.

If you decide not to conduct an inspection, it's important to monitor her health closely and seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen. Remember that persistent issues should be evaluated by a healthcare professional who may recommend further testing or specific treatments based on the findings of a comprehensive environmental assessment.
