Could hidden mold be causing my kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past few weeks and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black mold hidden behind it, probably from a slow AC drip we never noticed. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this now. Could this mold be the reason for their constant coughs and runny noses?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the discovery of black mold behind your sofa, it is highly probable that the mold is a significant contributing factor to your children's persistent coughs and runny noses. In the UAE's humid climate, particularly in older Deira buildings, this is a common yet serious issue.

The constant cough is a classic immune response to inhaling mold spores (mycotoxins) and fungal fragments. Children are especially susceptible due to their developing respiratory systems. The hidden location behind the sofa, fueled by a chronic AC condensate drip, created an ideal microenvironment for prolific mold growth—likely for much longer than you realize. Year-round AC use, if not properly maintained, leads to condensation and elevated humidity levels indoors, which is the primary catalyst for mold proliferation in Dubai.

A patch of "black mold" (which can refer to several species, including the notorious Stachybotrys chartarum) of that size represents a significant bio-contamination event. Disturbing it by moving the sofa has likely aerosolized a massive quantity of spores into your apartment's air, exacerbating the exposure.

This situation requires immediate professional attention. DIY cleaning is strongly discouraged as improper handling will drastically increase spore concentration and health risks. UAE regulations, such as the Dubai Municipality's public health and safety codes, emphasize the need for proper assessment and remediation of biological hazards to protect occupant health.

You need a certified mold inspection to identify the exact species and the full extent of the contamination, which often spreads inside wall cavities. This is followed by professional remediation using industrial-grade HEPA filtration, antimicrobial agents, and techniques to isolate the work area to prevent cross-contamination.

For a thorough assessment and a permanent solution, I recommend you contact our specialists at Saniservice. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. Addressing the root cause of the moisture (the AC drip) is also critical to prevent recurrence.
