Could hidden mold cause my husband's headaches and stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is right next to the ensuite. It must have been building up for a while, hidden from view. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches for months and we can't figure out why. Could this hidden mold be the cause of his symptoms?

Yes, hidden mold can absolutely cause those symptoms. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and year-round AC use create perfect conditions for mold growth behind furniture, inside walls, or in poorly ventilated bathrooms—exactly like your situation.

The black spots behind the wardrobe are a major red flag. Mold releases microscopic spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air, which are known irritants. A persistent stuffy nose and morning headaches are two of the most common reactions to prolonged exposure in a bedroom environment. Since the issue has been building for months, it's very plausible this is the source of your husband's discomfort.

You should arrange for a professional mold inspection. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the hidden moisture source, which is likely a small leak or condensation from the ensuite. Simply cleaning the visible spots is not enough; the root cause must be identified and fixed to prevent regrowth. For a case like this, with persistent health symptoms, a lab test to identify the mold species is also advisable to understand the potential risk level. Proper remediation will involve containing the area, removing the affected materials, and ensuring the space is thoroughly dried.
