Could home mold be causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs in Jumeirah and found a bunch of them covered in black spots. The whole area has that damp, earthy smell. Could this mold be the cause of their allergies and what’s the safest way to clean it with my family in the house?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the mold discovered in your storage cupboard is a significant contributing factor to your children's persistent cough. The black spots are indicative of a likely Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (black mold) infestation, both of which are known respiratory irritants and potent allergens. In Dubai's climate, the combination of high humidity and year-round air conditioning creates ideal conditions for mold growth, particularly in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like under-stair cupboards where condensation can accumulate.

Mold releases microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air. When inhaled, these particles can cause a range of health issues, especially in children, whose respiratory systems are more sensitive. Symptoms commonly include chronic coughing, wheezing, sore throat, and nasal congestion.

I strongly advise against attempting to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize a massive concentration of spores, significantly increasing your family's exposure and potentially contaminating other areas of your home. Over-the-counter cleaning solutions are often ineffective against the root cause and can be hazardous if mixed incorrectly.

For the safety of your family, a professional inspection and remediation is the only recommended course of action. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging and specialized equipment to identify the moisture source and the full extent of the contamination, which is often hidden within walls or under flooring. We then execute a controlled remediation following Dubai Municipality guidelines, using industrial-grade HEPA filtration to purify the air and ensure the mold is safely removed.

Do not delay. For a comprehensive assessment and to schedule an inspection, please call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
