Could mold be causing my family's constant cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I finally pulled out the wardrobe in our master bedroom here in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold covering the entire back wall, probably from a slow leak. Could this be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms and our headaches?

Yes, the black mold you discovered is very likely contributing to your family's persistent cough and headaches. In Dubai's humid climate, hidden mold growth like this is a common trigger for respiratory irritation and allergy-like symptoms, especially in children.

The constant cough and cold-like symptoms you describe are classic reactions to mold spore exposure. These spores become airborne and are inhaled, irritating the respiratory tract. Headaches can also result from the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that some molds release. A large patch behind a wardrobe, fed by a slow leak, is a significant source of these airborne contaminants.

For a situation of this scale, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact mold species through lab testing—what people call "black mold" can be one of several types, each with different implications. More critically, they will locate the moisture source (like that hidden leak) and assess the extent of the growth, which often spreads behind walls. Simply cleaning the visible surface is not enough; the root cause must be fixed to prevent immediate regrowth.

Until a professional can assess, improve ventilation in the room immediately. Keep the AC running to help control humidity levels, and ensure the unit itself is clean to avoid recirculating spores. Limit your children's exposure to the affected room. The remediation process for a case this severe will involve containment of the area, safe removal of contaminated materials, and addressing the underlying moisture issue to ensure it doesn't return.
