Could mold be causing my wife's headaches, and how to clean it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It must have been growing there since the humidity spiked a few months ago. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches, which she never used to get. Could this mold be the cause of her symptoms, and what's the safest way for us to clean it ourselves?

Yes, the mold you found could definitely be causing your wife's stuffy nose and headaches. These are common reactions to mold spores, which are airborne irritants. In Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months, hidden condensation behind furniture or in closets creates an ideal environment for this growth.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe it down with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Ensure the area is thoroughly dried afterwards with a fan to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, since the mold was hidden and symptoms are already present, there’s a high chance of more widespread growth or a deeper moisture issue you haven't found. Surface cleaning won't address spores already in the air or mold inside the wall. For health concerns and to find the source, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended to identify the species and full extent. This is a common need in villas here due to our climate.
