Could mold be causing our coughs and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’ve been getting awful headaches, and I’m starting to think it’s the black spots I found behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. It’s been worse since the weather got more humid. Could this mold be the cause of our symptoms and what’s the best way to deal with it properly?

Yes, the mold behind your wardrobe is a very likely cause of those symptoms, especially given the recent humidity. In Dubai's climate, hidden mold growth is common due to condensation from AC units and high ambient moisture, particularly in villas where airflow can be restricted behind furniture.

Persistent coughing and headaches are classic reactions to mold exposure, as spores become airborne and are inhaled. Children are often more susceptible. The type of mold matters—some species are more problematic than others—but any visible growth alongside these health issues warrants immediate action.

For proper remediation, do not attempt to scrub it yourself. Disturbing it releases a large number of spores. The best approach is a professional inspection to assess the full extent, as the visible spots are often just the tip of the iceberg. They will identify the species through lab analysis and contain the area during removal to prevent cross-contamination.

To prevent recurrence, address the source of moisture. This is often condensation from an AC unit, a plumbing leak, or humidity trapped by the wardrobe itself. After professional remediation, improving ventilation and using a dehumidifier can help maintain a dry environment. For a case with health symptoms, a certified mold inspection and remediation provider is strongly recommended to ensure it is resolved safely and completely.
