Could mold behind bed cause my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled their bunk bed away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner, probably from the last time our AC unit leaked. Could this be the reason for their constant runny noses and chesty coughs?

Yes, mold behind the bed is a very likely cause of your children's persistent coughs and runny noses. The fuzzy black growth you discovered is actively releasing spores into the air they breathe while sleeping. Constant exposure to these spores irritates the respiratory tract, leading to the exact symptoms you've described.

In Dubai's climate, this scenario is common. High humidity and condensation from AC units create perfect conditions for mold, especially in hidden spots like behind furniture against exterior walls. The leak from your AC unit provided the moisture source, and the enclosed space behind the bed allowed it to thrive unnoticed.

The first step is to immediately address the moisture source. Have the AC unit inspected and repaired to prevent further leaks. For the mold itself, because the patch is large and you have vulnerable individuals (children) with ongoing symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the full extent, identify the mold species, and develop a safe remediation plan. In the UAE, companies with their own microbiology labs can provide the most precise identification, which is crucial for understanding the potential health impact and verifying that cleanup was effective.

Until it's professionally handled, improve ventilation in the room by running an exhaust fan and keep the bed away from the wall. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can agitate the spores and worsen the air quality without addressing the root cause. The goal is to remove the mold colony completely and ensure the area is dried out to prevent it from returning.
