Could mold behind furniture cause my kids' constant cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I've just pulled out a storage box from the corner of our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold on the wall behind it, which must have been growing for ages. The air just feels damp in that whole area. Could this mold be the reason for their constant coughs and should I get the whole house professionally inspected?

Yes, mold behind furniture could absolutely be the cause of your kids' persistent coughs. In Dubai's humid climate, especially in older villas in areas like Jumeirah, this is a common scenario. That hidden mold has been releasing spores into the air of your bedroom, which you and your children are continuously breathing in. For children, this constant low-level exposure often manifests as respiratory irritation, including a stubborn, nagging cough that doesn't respond to typical cold medicines.

Given the description of a "huge patch" and a damp feeling in the air, the contamination is likely significant and not just superficial. The wall cavity behind the visible growth may also be affected. A simple surface clean is insufficient and could aerosolize a large number of spores, making the problem worse. A professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the moisture source and hidden growth, and most importantly, air sampling will identify the types and concentrations of mold spores currently in your home's air.

This is a health issue, not just a cleaning one. The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on addressing indoor dampness and mold for this reason. A proper inspection provides the data needed to plan an effective remediation, ensuring the problem is solved at its source to protect your family's health.
