Could mold behind toy chest cause kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled their wooden toy chest away from the wall in our spare room and found a huge patch of black and green mold spreading behind it, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. Could this be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms and how dangerous is it?

Yes, the mold behind the toy chest is very likely the cause of your children's persistent coughing. The damp, dark space created by a slow AC leak is an ideal environment for mold growth, especially in Dubai's humid climate where condensation is a constant issue. Inhaling the microscopic spores released by that patch is a common irritant to the respiratory system, particularly in children.

The constant coughing and cold-like symptoms are a typical reaction to this exposure. While most residential mold causes irritation rather than severe illness, the risk is elevated for children and those with pre-existing conditions like asthma. The color (black/green) does not definitively identify the species or its potential toxicity, which is why professional assessment is critical.

For a situation of this size and with health symptoms present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as improper handling can aerosolize a massive amount of spores and worsen the problem. A certified inspector can identify the moisture source (the AC leak), contain the area, take samples for lab analysis to determine the species, and safely remediate it according to Dubai Municipality guidelines. Resolving the underlying moisture issue is the only way to prevent it from returning.
