Could mold behind wardrobe be causing my kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I just found black, fuzzy spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park. We run the AC constantly to combat the humidity. Could this mold be the cause of their coughs and what's the safest way to get rid of it with little ones in the house?

Persistent coughs in children, especially when combined with visible black mold growth, are very commonly linked. The constant AC use in Dubai creates a perfect environment for mold behind furniture; the cold wall from the AC condenses humidity from the warm room air, and the wardrobe traps that moisture. The mold then releases spores into the bedroom air, which are a known respiratory irritant.
The safest approach with children present is a two-step process. First, for the immediate area, you can carefully clean the visible spots with a diluted white vinegar solution, but wearing an N95 mask and isolating the room from your kids is essential. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes without killing the root structure. However, surface cleaning is often just a temporary fix. The underlying moisture issue must be addressed, typically by improving ventilation behind the furniture and ensuring your AC unit is not set to an excessively low temperature that causes heavy condensation. For a persistent cough and visible growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent and identify the mold species. This is crucial, as some types common in humid climates can cause more significant health effects. A proper assessment includes moisture mapping and, if needed, air or surface sampling sent to a microbiology lab to identify the exact cause and guide the correct, safe remediation method for your family. |
