Could mold behind wardrobe cause kids' month-long cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't seem to shake it, even with medication. I finally pulled out the large wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold on the wall behind it, probably from a slow leak I never noticed. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. Could this mold be the cause of their persistent respiratory issues and what are the immediate steps I should take?

Yes, the mold behind your wardrobe is very likely the cause of your children's persistent cough. In Dubai's climate, hidden mold growth from condensation or slow leaks is common and a known trigger for chronic respiratory irritation, especially in children. The continuous exposure over two years means their symptoms are a direct reaction to inhaling mold spores.
Your immediate priority is to stop their exposure. Move the children to a different room, preferably with good ventilation and away from the affected area. Do not attempt to remove the mold yourself by scrubbing or using bleach, as this will aerosolize a high concentration of spores and can worsen the situation. For a case of this size and duration, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will assess the full extent of the growth, identify the mold species (which determines the remediation protocol), and locate the moisture source—be it a pipe leak, condensation from AC ducts, or humidity seepage common in older villas. The remediation process will involve containment of the area, professional removal of contaminated materials, and HEPA vacuuming to clear the air of spores. After remediation, addressing the root cause is essential to prevent recurrence. This often involves repairing the leak, improving room ventilation, and potentially using a dehumidifier, as Dubai's high humidity provides the constant moisture mold needs to grow. |
