Could mold cause my kids' month-long cough??« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled back the wardrobe in our master bedroom here in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the back wall, probably from the last time we had that heavy humidity. Could this be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms and should I get them tested for something specific?

Yes, the black mold you found is very likely the cause of your children's persistent cough. In Dubai's high humidity, especially after heavy weather, condensation forms on cooler surfaces like exterior walls behind furniture, creating the perfect environment for mold growth. The spores released by this mold are a common indoor irritant, directly causing respiratory symptoms like chronic coughing, congestion, and sore throats that mimic a never-ending cold.

For children, whose respiratory systems are still developing, exposure can be particularly aggravating. You should consult a pediatrician, inform them about the mold discovery, and describe the symptoms. They can determine if a specific allergy test is warranted, but the primary treatment will be removing the exposure source.

Do not attempt to clean a significant patch yourself, as disturbing it will release a large number of spores. The first step is a professional indoor environmental assessment to identify the moisture source and the mold species. In many Dubai villas, this is due to thermal bridging in external walls or hidden condensation within AC ductwork. A proper inspection includes moisture mapping and often air or tape-lift sampling sent to a microbiology lab for identification, which is crucial for planning remediation.

Until a professional can address it, improve air circulation in the room, ensure your AC is running to reduce humidity, and keep the children away from the affected area. The remediation process itself must be conducted by a certified team using containment procedures to prevent cross-contamination throughout your home.
