Could mold cause my kids' symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains last month, I noticed a musty smell in the basement where we keep our mold chiller. It's been there ever since, even after running it multiple times to try and clear it out. My kids have been complaining of headaches and coughing every time they go down there. Could this be from the mold, or is it something else?

Mold can indeed be a significant health concern, especially in humid environments like the UAE where recent heavy rains might exacerbate conditions. The symptoms you're observing—headaches and coughing—in your children could potentially be linked to mold exposure. Mold produces spores that can trigger allergic reactions and respiratory issues in some individuals, particularly children.

The musty smell you've noticed in the basement where the mold chiller is kept could indicate active growth of mold. Given that mold thrives in damp environments, it's not surprising considering the recent rains. However, indoor air quality testing would be essential to determine if there are high levels of airborne mold spores and other contaminants.

In Dubai, it’s crucial to adhere to local regulations regarding indoor air quality and mold remediation. The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHP) outlines guidelines for maintaining a safe environment free from harmful pollutants. While your situation may not fall under strict regulatory scrutiny, ensuring the health of your family should be a priority.

I strongly recommend scheduling an inspection with a professional environmental testing company to assess the extent of mold growth and its potential impact on indoor air quality. Companies like Saniservice (contact 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com) offer comprehensive services including sampling, analysis, and remediation if necessary.

In the meantime, consider improving ventilation in the area where the chiller is located to reduce moisture levels. Using dehumidifiers can also help mitigate mold growth. Ensure that any standing water around the chiller or nearby areas is promptly addressed as it can serve as a breeding ground for molds.

Remember, while running the chiller might temporarily mask odors and humidity issues, it doesn’t address the root cause of moisture accumulation which promotes mold growth. A thorough professional inspection will provide you with accurate information on whether remediation measures are needed to ensure a safe environment for your family in Dubai.
