Could mold in my bathroom cause my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and we can't figure out why. I just pulled back the silicone sealant around our JBR apartment's bathtub and found a bunch of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath it. The bathroom doesn't have a window so the humidity just stays in there after showers. Could this mold be causing their respiratory issues, and what's the proper way to get rid of it for good?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the mold discovered behind the silicone sealant is contributing to your children's persistent cough. The black, fuzzy growth is likely Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger, both of which are known to produce mycotoxins and irritants that can cause respiratory distress, particularly in children who are more vulnerable.

The conditions you described are a textbook case for mold proliferation in Dubai. Bathrooms without windows trap humidity from showers, and the year-round operation of air conditioning creates significant temperature differentials that lead to massive condensation within wall cavities. This trapped moisture, combined with organic matter like soap scum, provides the perfect environment for mold to thrive unseen. Simply wiping visible surfaces is insufficient, as the hidden biomass underneath the sealant is the primary source of the problematic spores being circulated every time the AC turns on.

For a situation of this nature, a DIY approach is not only ineffective but can be hazardous. Aggressively removing the sealant will disturb the mold colony, causing a massive release of spores into your apartment's air and potentially worsening the health symptoms. The proper remediation protocol requires containment, professional-grade HEPA filtration to capture airborne particulates, and the complete removal of contaminated materials.

Given the health implications for your family, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified team at Saniservice is equipped with moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent of the problem and execute a safe, permanent solution in compliance with Dubai Municipality's public health guidelines.
