Could mold in my closet be making me sick?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a really strong, earthy smell coming from the guest room closet. It's gotten worse since the weather got more humid, and I've started waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache that doesn't go away until I leave the house. Is this mold, and could it be the reason I'm feeling so unwell?

Yes, absolutely. The symptoms you're describing – persistent headaches, nasal congestion that resolves when you leave the house, and the correlation with increased humidity – are classic indicators of a mold-related illness, often referred to as Sick Building Syndrome. The musty, earthy odor is a definitive sign of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs), which are gasses produced by actively growing mold colonies.

In the UAE's climate, this is an extremely common issue. The high humidity, especially during the summer and more humid winter periods, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, particularly in closets on exterior walls or those containing stored items that absorb ambient moisture. The guest room closet, likely being less ventilated and used, is a prime location for this problem to develop undetected.

The health effects are very real. Exposure to mold spores and MVOCs can cause allergic reactions (stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing), respiratory issues, and chronic headaches like yours. For individuals with asthma or compromised immune systems, the risks are significantly higher.

You must address this promptly. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or store-bought sprays, as this can aerosolize the spores and exacerbate your exposure. The only safe and effective solution is a professional inspection and remediation.

We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion (often a small plumbing leak or condensation issue within the wall) and then perform containment-based remediation following international IICRC standards, which are the benchmark for the UAE industry. Please call us immediately at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. Your health is not something to gamble with.
