Could mold in my Dubai villa cause kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since last month and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs here in our Jumeirah villa and found a bunch of them covered in fuzzy black spots. The whole area smells damp and earthy. Could this mold be causing their coughs and what’s the safest way to clean it with my family in the house?

Yes, the mold you found could absolutely be causing your children's persistent coughs. In Dubai's climate, the high humidity and condensation, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like under-stair cupboards, create an ideal environment for mold growth. The damp, earthy smell confirms active growth. Exposure to these spores commonly causes respiratory irritation, including coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy symptoms, particularly in children.

For your family's safety, do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold will release a large number of spores into your home's air, potentially worsening the coughs and spreading the contamination. The safest approach is to first have the mold professionally identified. A lab culture can determine if it's one of the more common, less toxic types like Cladosporium or something more concerning like Stachybotrys (often called "black mold"), which dictates the remediation approach.

Until a professional can assess, keep the cupboard door sealed and the area isolated. Improve overall ventilation in your villa by running exhaust fans and ensuring your AC system is functioning correctly, as it controls the indoor humidity that fuels mold growth. A proper remediation will involve containment, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores during cleaning, and the application of specialized antimicrobials to treat the affected surfaces. The goal is to remove the mold colony and address the underlying moisture source to prevent its return.
