Could mold in my house be causing kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the last couple of weeks, and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs and found a bunch of jackets and sweaters covered in black spots. The whole area feels damp and smells really musty. Could this mold be the reason for their constant coughs and sore throats?

It is very possible the mold is contributing to your children's symptoms. Mold spores and the musty odor they produce are common irritants, especially for children, and can trigger persistent coughing, sore throats, and congestion. The damp storage area you described is a classic source.

In Dubai's climate, enclosed spaces like under-stair cupboards are prone to mold because air conditioning creates cold surfaces where warm, humid air condenses. This trapped moisture, combined with organic materials like cotton or leather, creates an ideal environment for mold growth. Simply removing the spotted items may not be enough, as the spores are likely airborne and have spread.

For a situation involving persistent health symptoms and visible growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—whether it's condensation, a small leak, or humidity seepage—and assess the extent of the contamination. A proper assessment often includes air quality testing to determine spore levels throughout your home, which is crucial for understanding the impact on your living spaces.

Until you can get an inspection, keep the cupboard closed and the area isolated. Improve overall ventilation in your home by running exhaust fans and, if possible, opening windows when the outside humidity is lower. Consider using a dehumidifier to help reduce the overall moisture level that fuels mold growth. Addressing the root cause of the moisture is the only way to prevent it from returning after a cleanup.
