Could mold in our bedroom cause persistent coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past month and we can't seem to shake it, and I just found a bunch of black spots behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We're in an older building in Deira and with the humidity lately, the room never feels completely dry. Could this mold be the reason for our constant coughs and sore throats?

Based on my professional experience as a mold inspector in Dubai, the short answer is yes, the black mold you've discovered is very likely the cause of your family's persistent respiratory issues.

The black spots behind your wardrobe are a classic indicator of a mold colony, most likely Stachybotrys chartarum (true black mold) or Aspergillus niger. These molds thrive in the exact conditions you've described: an older building in Deira with persistent humidity and lack of air circulation behind furniture. The Dubai climate, especially during the summer and recent humid periods, creates immense condensation issues. When combined with year-round AC use—which can create cold surfaces where moisture condenses—it creates a perfect breeding ground for mold.

The mycotoxins and spores released by these colonies are potent irritants. Persistent coughing, sore throats, and other upper respiratory symptoms are the most common health effects of prolonged exposure, particularly in children who are more vulnerable. You are essentially breathing in these irritants for 6-8 hours every night while sleeping.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the colony without proper containment will aerosolize a massive amount of spores throughout your bedroom, exacerbating the health problem. This requires professional assessment and remediation.

I strongly recommend you call our team for a comprehensive indoor air quality and mold inspection. We will identify the exact species, the extent of the contamination, and the underlying moisture source. Our protocols are in full compliance with Dubai Municipality and CDC guidelines for safe remediation.
