Could mold in our house be causing my kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly for the last couple of weeks, and we can't figure out why. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage closet under the stairs and found several jackets with fuzzy black spots and a really strong, damp smell. We live in an older villa in Mirdif and it's been so humid lately. Could this mold be the cause of their coughs and what's the best way to get the whole area properly inspected?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the visible mold growth on the stored items, it is highly probable that the mold is a significant contributing factor to your children's persistent coughs. In the humid climate of Dubai, especially during summer and in older villas in areas like Mirdif, conditions are ideal for mold proliferation. The closet under the stairs is a classic problem area due to poor ventilation, potential condensation from temperature differentials, and the organic material (dust, fibers) that mold feeds on.

The fuzzy black spots are a clear indicator of an active colony, and the damp, musty odor is the result of Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (MVOCs), which are known respiratory irritants. Inhalation of mold spores and these compounds can trigger allergic reactions, asthma attacks, and upper respiratory tract symptoms like chronic coughing, particularly in children who are more susceptible.

A proper inspection is critical and goes beyond a visual check. It requires a certified professional to conduct a comprehensive assessment. This includes using a moisture meter to identify hidden dampness within walls or under floors, a thermal imaging camera to pinpoint temperature variations indicating condensation or water leaks, and air quality testing to quantify spore counts and identify the specific mold species present. This scientific approach is essential to determine the full extent of contamination and the appropriate remediation protocol, as mandated by UAE health and safety guidelines for indoor environments.
