Could mold in our villa be making us sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and getting headaches ever since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. I’ve just pulled out some winter clothes from the storage room in our Jumeirah villa and found a few sweaters with dark greenish spots on them, and the whole room smells damp. Could this be mold making us sick, and how do I find a proper inspector to check the whole house?

Yes, mold in your villa could definitely be causing those symptoms. The combination of high humidity and finding visibly moldy items in a damp-smelling room is a strong indicator. The coughs and headaches are common reactions to inhaling mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released into the air. Children are often more sensitive to these irritants.

Given Dubai's climate, this is a widespread issue. The high humidity leads to condensation, especially in less-frequented spaces like storage rooms that may lack consistent air conditioning. This creates the perfect damp environment for mold to grow on organic materials like cotton, leather, and paper.

You should treat this seriously and get a professional inspection. A proper inspector will do more than a visual check; they use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find hidden dampness inside walls or under floors that you can't see. The most critical part is the air quality testing, which involves taking samples of the indoor air and outdoor air to compare spore counts. This identifies the concentration and type of mold present.

Look for an inspector who is certified (such as by the IICRC) and, most importantly, one who can provide a detailed lab report from an independent microbiology lab. This report is your evidence of the problem's scope and type. Avoid companies that immediately push for a costly remediation quote without first providing this diagnostic data. The right professional will give you a clear assessment and a remediation plan based on the verified lab results.
