Could mold under my rug be making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled back the big rug in our Jumeirah villa’s living room, the one that gets a bit damp from the AC vent, and found a bunch of black, powdery spots underneath. We’ve lived here for two years and just noticed this. Could this mold be the reason they’re so sick?

Yes, mold under a rug in a Dubai villa can absolutely be the cause of your children's persistent coughing. The dampness from the AC vent creates a perfect environment for mold growth, especially in our high humidity. When disturbed, that black, powdery mold releases spores into the air, which are potent irritants to the respiratory system, particularly in children.

The constant AC use, combined with condensation, creates persistent damp spots that are often hidden under rugs or behind furniture. This is a very common issue in villas here. For the health of your family, the first step is to stop the moisture source. Redirect the AC vent or use a deflector so it's not blowing directly onto the rug and floor. Remove the rug and any affected padding from the living area immediately to prevent further spore dispersal.

Do not attempt to clean significant mold growth yourself with bleach or other household products, as this can aerosolize the spores and make the problem worse for your children. The priority is identifying the type of mold and the full extent of the problem. A professional inspection that includes air and surface sampling is strongly recommended. The inspector can identify the species through lab analysis—what people call "black mold" can be one of several types, each with different potential health impacts. This evidence-based approach is crucial for effective remediation and for your peace of mind. In the meantime, increase ventilation in the room as much as possible and consider using a HEPA air purifier to help reduce the airborne spore count.
