Could my AC mold be causing my morning allergies?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, but we've been so busy we just put a towel down. Now I’m waking up every morning with a stuffy head, itchy eyes, and a cough that goes away by the afternoon. I pulled the filter out yesterday and the area around the unit looks black and fuzzy. Could this mold be causing my daily allergy-like symptoms?

Yes, the mold in your AC unit is very likely causing your morning allergy symptoms. The pattern you describe—waking up with congestion, itchy eyes, and a cough that improves after leaving the room—is a classic indicator of exposure to mold spores circulating from the AC while you sleep.

In Dubai's climate, AC units run constantly and are prime locations for mold growth due to condensation and high humidity. The black, fuzzy substance you see is a significant visual confirmation. When the unit operates, it blows these spores directly into your bedroom air, which you inhale for hours. This concentrated exposure overnight explains why your symptoms are most severe in the morning and fade as you spend time in other environments.

Continuing to use a contaminated unit can worsen respiratory issues over time. For a situation with visible growth and persistent health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can assess the extent of the growth inside the unit and the ductwork, which is often not visible. A proper remediation should include cleaning the entire system, not just the visible parts, and addressing the moisture source causing the leak to prevent immediate recurrence. For verification, some companies offer before-and-after testing to confirm the spore count in the air has been measurably reduced.
