Could our AC mold be causing my husband's illness?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our master bedroom in Jumeirah has been leaking a little, and now I've spotted these black speckles around the ceiling corner. My husband has had a constant stuffy nose and a cough that won't go away for the last three weeks, and we're starting to get really worried. Is it possible this is black mold and could it be causing his symptoms?

Based on your description of the situation in Jumeirah, it is highly plausible that the black speckles around the AC vent and your husband's persistent respiratory symptoms are connected. The conditions you've described—a leaking AC unit combined with Dubai's high ambient humidity—create a perfect environment for microbial growth, including various types of mold and fungi.

The substance you're seeing is likely a mold growth, potentially including Stachybotrys chartarum (commonly referred to as "black mold") or other species like Aspergillus niger. These molds produce mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that are known irritants and can cause or exacerbate health issues, particularly in sensitive individuals. The symptoms you describe—chronic stuffy nose, persistent cough, and respiratory irritation—are classic indicators of exposure to a damp indoor environment contaminated with microbial growth.

In the UAE, the year-round reliance on air conditioning leads to significant condensation issues. A small leak from an AC duct provides a constant moisture source, allowing mold to colonize the ceiling cavity and the ventilation system itself, from where spores can be distributed throughout the room.

I strongly recommend you do not attempt to clean this yourself, as improper disturbance can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. This situation requires a professional indoor environmental inspection. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration of mold present, which is crucial for determining the appropriate remediation protocol as per Dubai Municipality guidelines.
