Could our AC mold be causing our cough and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water into the closet in our main hallway. I just pulled out some winter jackets and found a bunch of black, fuzzy spots on the wall behind them and a few of the coats. My wife and I have both had a persistent dry cough and headaches for the last couple of weeks that we can't shake. **Is this definitely black mold and could it be causing our symptoms, or are we overreacting?**

Based on your description, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a mold infestation, and it is very likely contributing to your symptoms. The black, fuzzy growth behind the jackets is a classic indicator of mold, and the persistent dry cough and headaches you and your wife are experiencing are common health effects associated with prolonged exposure to mold spores.

In the UAE's climate, this scenario is unfortunately common. The extreme humidity and year-round reliance on air conditioning create perfect conditions for mold. An AC unit leaking water provides the constant moisture mold needs to thrive. The spores then become aerosolized and are circulated by the AC system, leading to the respiratory irritation and other symptoms you describe.

From a professional standpoint, visual identification is not sufficient. While it appears black, many species can present this way. True Stachybotrys chartarum (so-called "toxic black mold") is less common but requires laboratory analysis of a tape or air sample to confirm. The health risks, however, exist with many types of common indoor mold, especially for individuals with allergies or asthma.

You are not overreacting. This situation requires immediate and professional attention. DIY cleaning is not recommended as it can disturb the colony and cause a massive, hazardous release of spores. UAE regulations, particularly in Dubai, emphasize the importance of proper indoor air quality and remediation by certified professionals to ensure the health and safety of occupants.

I strongly recommend you cease using the affected AC unit and closet immediately. Contact a certified mold inspection company like Saniservice. Our specialists use thermal imaging to locate moisture sources and advanced air sampling to identify the spore types and concentration levels. We can then execute a controlled remediation plan to safely remove the contamination and rectify the source of the moisture.
