Could the black mold in my home be causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the weather got more humid, and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled out a suitcase from the back of our storage room in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black mold growing on the wall behind it. It must have been spreading for months. Could this be the reason for their persistent coughs and sore throats?

Yes, the black mold you found is very likely contributing to your children's persistent coughs and sore throats. Mold releases spores and mycotoxins into the air, which are potent irritants to the respiratory system, especially for children whose airways are more sensitive. The recent increase in Dubai's humidity creates the perfect environment for hidden mold to thrive and become more active, amplifying its effects.

Given the size of the patch and the duration it's been growing, this is a significant indoor air quality issue. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can agitate the spores and cause them to become airborne, potentially worsening the symptoms. Disturbing it without proper containment spreads the contamination.

Your first step is to isolate the area; keep the storage room closed off from the rest of the house. For a case of this magnitude, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the moisture source (often a slow leak or condensation from AC ducts within the wall) and assess the full extent, as what you see on the surface is often just a fraction of the problem. Reputable inspectors in Dubai will use tools like moisture meters and borescopes and can provide a lab analysis to identify the mold species, which confirms the health risk.

Addressing the root cause is critical—simply cleaning the visible mold will result in it returning. A proper remediation plan will include fixing the water issue, containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. Improving overall ventilation and maintaining your AC system to reduce condensation can help prevent recurrence in our climate.
