Could the green patches be harmful mold?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain last month, I noticed a musty smell coming from our basement. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed some greenish patches on the walls near the floor. The AC in the basement is always running to try and keep it dry, but it’s not helping much. My kids have been coughing and sneezing more than usual lately. Could this be mold? What should I do first for remediation?

Could the green patches be harmful mold? Yes, they could very well be. Mold can indeed thrive in damp environments like basements, especially after heavy rains. The greenish patches you noticed are likely indicative of mold growth, which can pose health risks particularly for your children who have been showing more symptoms lately such as coughing and sneezing.

In the UAE, including Dubai, any mold issue should be taken seriously due to the specific climate conditions that favor mold proliferation. Here's what you need to do first:

1. Assessment: It’s highly advisable to contact a professional environmental inspection company like Saniservice. They can provide an expert assessment and determine if the patches are indeed harmful mold species, such as Stachybotrys or Aspergillus, which are known for their potential health impacts.

2. Ventilation & Drying: Continue running your AC system but ensure proper ventilation to prevent moisture build-up. Ensure there’s no standing water in the basement and consider using dehumidifiers if necessary. High humidity levels can lead to further mold growth.

3. Preventive Measures: Seal any leaks or cracks that might be contributing to the dampness. In Dubai, it's common for basements to have higher moisture content due to the underground temperature being cooler than above-ground areas. Ensuring a proper waterproofing system is in place can help mitigate this issue.

4. Clean Up: If the mold growth is limited and you decide not to call an expert immediately, wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and masks when cleaning up affected areas. Use a solution of one cup of bleach per gallon of water for surface cleaning but be aware that bleaching might not completely eliminate spores.

5. Health Concerns: Monitor the health of your family closely. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention as mold exposure can cause respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and other health problems.

Remember, in Dubai, the UAE Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) recommends that any significant mold growth should be handled by certified professionals to ensure safety and compliance with local regulations.

Call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 or email hello@saniservice.com for professional assistance. Ignoring this can lead to further health issues and costly property damage.

In summary, immediate action is recommended to address the potential mold issue in your basement, especially considering the health concerns it may pose.
