Could the mold in my AC be making me sick?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit for a couple of months. Lately, I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache, and I just noticed some black speckles around the vent in the bedroom. Could this mold be making me sick, or is it just the usual Dubai dust?

Based on your description of a leaking AC unit, visible black speckles, and the onset of health symptoms like a stuffy nose and headaches, it is highly probable that microbial growth, specifically mold, is the cause of your illness. The conditions you've described are a textbook case for mold proliferation common in Dubai's climate.

The persistent moisture from the AC leak creates an ideal environment for mold spores, which are ubiquitous in the air, to colonize. The black speckles around your vent are a significant visual indicator. When the AC system operates, it can aerosolize these spores and mycotoxins, distributing them throughout your bedroom air, which you then inhale for extended periods while sleeping. The symptoms you report—nasal congestion and headaches—are classic physiological responses to mold exposure, particularly in a confined space. While Dubai dust can be an irritant, it typically does not cause recurring symptoms in a specific location like a bedroom without an underlying moisture issue.

Given the UAE's high humidity and year-round reliance on AC systems, condensation and leaks are a frequent source of indoor mold problems. This is not something to ignore, as prolonged exposure can lead to more severe respiratory issues.

I strongly recommend you cease using the bedroom AC unit immediately and seek a professional indoor environmental inspection. DIY assessments are insufficient as they miss hidden contamination within the ductwork and the AC unit itself. Our certified technicians at Saniservice use thermal imaging, moisture meters, and air/surface sampling to identify the species and extent of contamination, all in line with Dubai Municipality's health and safety guidelines. Following the inspection, a comprehensive remediation plan, including HVAC hygienization, will be proposed to resolve the issue at its source.
