Could the mold in our bedroom cause my child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

Our 4-year-old has been having a bad cough and runny nose for a couple of weeks that just won't go away. I was cleaning behind his wardrobe in our bedroom in Al Barsha and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall, probably from all the humidity. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it. Could this be the cause of his constant cough?

Yes, the mold you discovered behind the wardrobe is a very probable cause of your child's persistent cough and runny nose. This is a common scenario we encounter in Dubai, particularly in areas like Al Barsha.

The black, fuzzy growth is likely Stachybotrys chartarum or a similar species, often referred to as "black mold." These molds produce mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that are potent irritants to the human respiratory system. Children are especially susceptible due to their developing immune systems and smaller lung capacity. Prolonged exposure, even to a small hidden patch, can trigger chronic allergic reactions, asthma-like symptoms, and upper respiratory tract issues exactly as you've described.

The climate in Dubai is a significant contributing factor. The high ambient humidity, combined with year-round air conditioning, creates perfect conditions for condensation to form on and within walls, especially behind large furniture pieces like wardrobes that restrict airflow. This trapped moisture facilitates prolific mold growth even if the rest of the room appears dry.

Given that the mold is already established and a family member is exhibiting symptoms, a DIY cleaning is not advised. Disturbing the colony without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, exacerbating the problem. Furthermore, surface cleaning often fails to address the hyphae (root structure) penetrating the wall.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified team at Saniservice uses moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality tests to identify the full extent of the contamination and its moisture source. All remediation is conducted under strict containment following UAE health and safety guidelines to ensure the spores are safely removed and the area is treated with antimicrobial solutions to prevent recurrence.
