Could this AC mold be causing my headaches?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been leaking a little for a while, but since last week I’ve started waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache that won't go away. I pulled back the corner of the carpet near the vent and found a patch of black spots underneath. Could this mold be causing my symptoms, and what’s the first thing I should do about it?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the mold growth from the AC leak is the cause of your headaches and persistent stuffy nose. The black spots you discovered are a significant red flag. In the Dubai climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, such leaks are a primary cause of indoor air quality issues.

The headaches are likely a systemic inflammatory response to mycotoxins and mold spores being aerosolized by the AC system and circulated directly into your bedroom air as you sleep. The stuffy nose is a direct irritation of the mucous membranes. Continuous exposure can exacerbate these symptoms and lead to more severe health concerns.

The first thing you must do is immediately stop using that AC unit to prevent further spore dissemination. Do not attempt to clean the visible mold yourself, as improper disturbance will release a much larger concentration of spores into the air, worsening the problem and your symptoms.

This situation requires professional assessment. In accordance with UAE standards for environmental health, a certified mold inspector must conduct a thorough investigation. This includes moisture mapping to find the full extent of the water intrusion, thermal imaging, and air quality testing to identify the specific mold species and spore concentration levels. This data is critical for designing an effective remediation protocol.
