Could this bedroom mold cause our constant coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled back the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind it, right where the AC vent is. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this. Could this mold be the reason for our constant cold-like symptoms and headaches?

Yes, the mold behind your wardrobe is very likely the cause of your family's persistent coughs and headaches. This is a common scenario in Dubai villas, especially when furniture is placed against an exterior wall that houses an AC unit. The constant cold air from the vent meeting the warm, humid air in the room causes condensation inside the wall cavity, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to flourish unseen.

The type of mold matters. While many black molds are irritants, some species like Stachybotrys can produce mycotoxins. However, the primary health issue for most people is the constant inhalation of mold spores and microbial fragments, which triggers upper respiratory irritation, coughing, and sinus congestion—exactly the symptoms you describe. Children are often more susceptible to these effects.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and worsen the problem. The first step is a professional inspection and diagnostic testing to identify the mold species and the full extent of the moisture problem. A reputable inspector will use a moisture meter to find the source of the water intrusion and take air or surface samples for a lab culture. This evidence is crucial, as Dubai municipality regulations often require a lab report from an accredited facility to mandate landlord remediation in rental properties.

Until assessed, improve ventilation in the room, keep the AC running to reduce humidity, and consider relocating your children's sleeping arrangements if possible. Addressing the root cause—the condensation and moisture—is the only permanent solution.
